During PCOS, many small sacs fill with fluid grow inside the ovaries. These sacs are actually follicles, each containing an immature egg. Polycystic means "many cysts." These eggs are not mature enough to cause ovulation.
Causes of PCOS
Overproduction of insulin: Insulin, the hormone produced by the pancreas, makes sugar - your body's primary source of energy - available to cells.
Low-grade inflammation: White blood cells produce substances that fight infection with low-grade inflammation. The ovaries of women with PCOS are stimulated to produce androgens by low-grade inflammation, which can lead to heart and blood vessel problems.
